Congrats, parents, you made it to your baby’s first birthday! Over the last 365 days, we’re sure you’ve taken plenty of trips to your pediatrician’s office to make sure your little one stayed happy and healthy … which is why we didn’t bother you until now! But turning one means it’s time to get those teeth checked out.
It’s not just us, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children be seen by a dentist at age 1. This may seem early, but the visit will mostly be a little chat between us “grown-ups” to give you some info about baby teeth, oral hygiene and what to expect over the next couple years of your child’s dental journey. We’ll also take a peek at your kiddo’s teeth and gums, just to make sure everything looks great! If all that science didn’t convince you, listen up: if your child is under two years old, their first check up is on the house!

Contrary to popular belief, pediatric dentists do offer regular dental cleanings and check-ups. The only catch: we only do them for kids. Think of us just like you think of your own dentist (you do have a dentist, right?!), we’re here to check and clean your kid’s teeth every 6 months like the American Dental Association recommends. We aren’t just here for the “tough stuff” like fillings, extractions or dental emergencies (see below).

The most important part of pediatric dentistry: PREVENTION. The BEST way to do it (besides regular check-ups and cleanings): SEALANTS. You know the grooves of your child’s teeth where all the goldfish and oreos get stuck? Those are the most common places we find cavities in kids. In order to prevent said goldfish and oreos from sticking in those deep grooves and causing cavities, we recommended sealants. Sealants are invisible plastic resin coatings that smooth out the chewing surfaces of the back teeth and seal up the grooves.

Picture this: your sweet, little angel child (who fights you TOOTH and nail when you try to brush their teeth) comes to our office and we find a cavity. Now what?! Well, now they need a filling. Fillings or “tooth paintings” as we like to refer to them, are used to seal a small hole (cavity) in your child’s tooth that is caused by decay or “sugar bugs.” This is a simple, painless procedure that can be done in either a silver or tooth-colored material. Don’t stress - most kids do really well for fillings! If you don’t believe us, you’re always invited to watch one in action at your next visit to Wonderkind.

As a parent of a child with special health care needs, we know you are busy doing more than just cleaning their teeth all day. We see you! We also know that sometimes it's more difficult for kids with special needs to get optimal care. Especially if you can’t find a place they (and you!) feel comfortable. Here’s the good news: we can help! As pediatric dentists, we are trained to coordinate with your child’s physicians and specialists to ensure that we are providing high-quality, comprehensive care in an environment where they feel safe and comfortable.

We work hard to help your child feel comfortable, even during the tough stuff. Sometimes, in order to do that, we need a little help as well. Sedation dentistry can be a great option for children and teenagers who would otherwise be fearful during dental treatment.
Further, for our little one or big ones with dental anxiety, we also offer hospital dentistry. We work with a great anesthesiology team that will help your child stay asleep (general anesthesia) while we focus on providing high-quality dental care. All treatment can be done at once, giving your child a fresh start with no cavities and no history of a difficult dental visit.

Unfortunately, accidents happen. Even more unfortunately (for those of us that love teeth), accidents sometimes involve your child’s precious smile. Fear not! When a dental trauma happens, we are here for you. If a tooth gets chipped, moved, or knocked out entirely, give us a call. We’ll walk you through what to do and let you know if your child needs to be seen right away or not (even if we’re in the middle of dinner).
